The Azores, the Atlantic, and the Global Challenges
Dulce Maria Scott holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Political Science from Brown University, USA. She is a full professor and chair of the Department of Social Work and Criminal Justice at Anderson University, Indiana, USA. Her research areas include race, ethnicity, migrations, and diaspora formation in the United States, and she has published extensively in these fields. She is the executive co-editor of the book series Interdisciplinary Studies in Diasporas with Peter Lang International Academic Publishers. Additionally, she is a research consultant to the Portuguese American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS) and a former president of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences. She currently serves on the Advisory Council of the Embassy of Portugal in Washington, D.C.
António Monteiro is a PhD candidate in International Studies at ISCTE – IUL, Portugal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in European Studies and International Politics and a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of the Azores. His research focuses on the internationalism of the Azorean islands, particularly their impact on transatlantic transport, communications, and knowledge. He works at the Santa Maria Oceanic Control Center and is the co-founder and current chairman of LPAZ Association, as well as vice-president of Clube Asas do Atlântico. He has co-edited several works on the cultural heritage of aviation, including, among others, L’aviation et son impact sur le temps et l’espace. His most recent individual work is titled As Ilhas nas Relações Internacionais: Santa Maria (Açores) no Século XX.
Ana Mónica Fonseca is the Director of the Center for International Studies at Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon (CEI-Iscte) and Assistant Professor at the Department of History at Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon, where she coordinates the Masters’ degree program in Modern and Contemporary History. Her research focuses on transitions to democracy in Southern Europe, Portuguese foreign policy during the Cold War and non-state actors, and the promotion of democracy.
Diniz Borges was born in Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island, Azores. At 10, he emigrated with his parents to the United States. He teaches and researches at California State University, Fresno, where he founded and directs the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute (PBBI) and is a member of various Portuguese-American organizations. He is the author of several books dedicated to political and cultural analysis of the USA and the Azorean diaspora in North America. He has translated and published poetry, narrative fiction, history, and essays. He has coordinated and published several poetry anthologies.
