Dripping Words – Selected Poetry from Madalena Férin
MADALENA FERIN
Maria Madalena Velho Arruda Monteiro da Câmara Pereira Férin, poet and novelist, was born in Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel Island, on July 22, 1929. Her formative years on the island of Santa Maria until 1958 left an indelible mark on her poetry. She furthered her education by graduating in Philosophy from the Faculty of Letters in Lisbon, a significant milestone in her journey. Her academic prowess led her to become a senior technician at the Institute of Meteorology in Lisbon. In 1957, she published her first book, Poemas, which the National Information Secretariat awarded the Antero de Quental Prize. Thanks to the poet Angela de Almeida, this publication includes an extensive chronology of her publications in all the genres she wrote. She has been included in several anthologies, especially on insularity, and published articles in Revista Ocidente and Revista de Portugal (between 1981 and 1996). She collaborated with Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Maria Natália Duarte Silva on the programming of the youth collection “Nosso Mundo,” which includes some books that she also translated. Madalena Férin’s work, as noted by the Azorean Encyclopedia, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Azores. Her literary lineage, from Romanticism to Surrealism, and her participation in Portuguese Modernism are all influenced by the unique culture of the Azores. Despite the modernity of her work, the image of the Azores remains solid and recognizable, a tribute to her deep-rooted connection to her islands.
