AQUILES GARCIA BRITO (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1959) writes from the Atlantic. where the island is not a boundary but a way of listening. His poetry inhabits the space between departure and return, tracing the fragile cartographies of voice, memory, and belongings that emerge when language crosses water.

He is the author of La voz mirada, Otro uno, repartoy lo-calizaciones. Isla y Vuelta. Puerta de embarque, and Poemas para Ilenar el estadio among other books in which the poem becomes a threshold—at once intimate and collective. His work El corazon en la esquina, included in Galax!av situates his voice within a constellation of poets from Africa. Europe, the Americas, and the Canary Islands. affirming poetry as a shared geography. In El vendedor de caracolas, published in a Spanish-Romanian bilingual edition by the University of Bucharest, the island speaks outward. offering its echo to distant shores. A translator of Atlantic affinities, Garcia Brito has brought into Spanish the poetry of João Carlos Abreu (Poems de la isla y de mi. 1980-1994) and the Azorean poet Pedro da Silveira (Señales del Oeste). both in the Biblioteca Atlantic, of the Government ofthe Canary Islands. His work has been translated into several languages. This is his first book in English.

He is co-founder and president of the Nueva Associación Canaria de Escritores (NACE). commissioner for the Canary Islands and mainland Spain for EIPOEMA, and a member of the Associação João Carlos Abreu, Soldavida in Madeira. Diniz Borges

Was born in Praia da Vitoria. on Terceira Island. Azores. and emigrated to the United States at the age of ten. He teaches language, cukure, and literature. and conducts research at California State University. Fresno, where he founded and directs the Portuguese Beyond Borders In-stitute (PBBI). At Fresno State he coordinates a constella-tion of initiatives—oral-history projects. transatlantic colloquia, communities of writers, exchange programs with the University of the Azores, and the editorial work of Bruma Publications. These projects, dispersed like is-lands on a chart, share a simple conviction: culture is a living tide, and the diaspora one of its enduring horizons. He has published eight !mks on the social and cultural life ofthe United States and the Azorean diaspora in North America, most recently Rains e Horizontes (Roots and Horizons). His work in translation indudes eighteen vol-umes of poetry, fiction, history, and essays, as well as three coordinated anthologies that bring together di-verse contemporary voices. His literary activity also extends to creative nonfiction, literary criticism, and, cultural analysis. Ile is a prolific translator. This is the 24th book he has published in translation. He is a contributing writer for newspapers in the Azore’s and the Diaspora.
